XX Century." State Historical Museum, owner of one of the largest map collections in Russia, is going on with its series of expositions devoted to foundation and development of national cartography of XVIII, XIX and XX centuries. The exhibition demonstrates the development of Russian cartography in XX century. It is timed to the Second All-Russian Cartography Conference "Cartography of XXI century: theory, methods and practice". The visitors will see maps connected with most important historical events of that period. Of special interest are: the map of the European part of Russia according the Brest Treaty (the first map of Soviet Russia), the map of South-Western railways with the route of the Tsar's train of September 2 - 3, 1911 (a peculiar relic connected with the murder of P.A. Stolipin, Chairman of Cabinet of Ministers), a globe of the Moon with S.P. Koroliov's autograph. Within the bounds of the exhibition the presentation of the first electronic map of Moscow of the third millennium which has become part of the collection of State Historical Museum is being held. Old bicycles, photos, documents and drawings give one a course not only to come to know the history of the machine's construction, but also to think of the role of "alive engine machine" in the lives of people of different generations. Art design of the exposition which differs from the traditional way of exposing machinery in dull rows giving an impression of "museum static" is interesting and unusual. The artists have managed to find a bright and dynamic image that helps the audience to get an impression not only of the development and technical evolution of the bicycle, but also of the way of its functioning in space and society. The exposition has been placed in the Automobile section of Polytechnical Museum (entrance door No 1). Eugenia Gatilova's creative work is essentially connected with Duliov Porcelain Factory which has once been popular, and she has worked there for over 35 years. Gatilova can be without doubt called a classic of our country's porcelain sculpture and her name can be put among such outstanding masters as Alexey Sotnikhov, Sergey Orlov, Pavel Kozhin, Asta Brzhezitsaya and Nina Bogdanova. Unfortunately, the traditions of Russian porcelain sculpture numbering nearly three centuries have nowadays been practically lost and Eugenia Iljinichna Gatilova is probably one of the "Last Mohicans" holding this amazing art in her small arms. Some tens of drawings made by pencil, Indian ink and sanguine are presented in the exposition. Eugenia Gatilova's sculptures are all-sufficient thanks to their plastic characteristics. That is the reason why the natural white color of porcelain is preserved in her works and the "short-spoken" mural based upon combining of two or three colors which emphasizes the perfection of the sculpture mode. This deliberate limitation in using color is to full extent filled up in bright, rich and full of warmth and sunshine water-colors of this artist. Most manifold bunches of garden and field flowers, pictures of still life and lyric landscapes add to the exposition and demonstrate one more sphere of Eugenia Gatilova's creative work. At the exhibition you will see photos and pictures, everyday life belongings and documents, archival materials and works of art, you will get to know the history of mutual influence of the Russians and people of Helsinki. The influence of the Russians upon that city became quite evident still in the beginning of XVIII century. However, it became stronger in the epoch of the reign of Alexander the First. At his order the city entirely changed its architectural appearance. A number of engravings of the publisher Tengstrem Frederic demonstrate the sights of Helsinki. A lot of Russian traditions are alive in Helsinki up to now. For instance, many Finns prefer to drink tea from a samovar with spice-cake and various baking. It was thanks to Russian merchants that ice-cream and tobacco became customary, and there are photos at the exhibition which confirm that. The central space of the exhibition has been given to items connected with well-known in Helsinki Russian manufacturers, for example, the production of Sinebrukhov's brewery and Kiselev's sugar factory. Jan Vermeer An exhibition of the series "Masterpieces of the World's Museums in the Hermitage. Jan Vermeer. "A Lady in Blue Reading a Letter " started on September, 25 and will last until December, 16, 2001, in the hall No 253 of the New Hermitage. The picture comes from the collection of Rijkchsmuseum, Amsterdam. On September, 25, 2001, the opening-day of the exhibition of the series "Masterpieces of the World's Museums in the Hermitage was held, organized according to an agreement of exchanging works of art between Rijkchsmuseum (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and the State Hermitage. The famous work by the Dutch artist Jan Vermeer "A Lady in Blue Reading a Letter " (1662 - 1664) is a sample of the popular in XVII century genre of a "picture-rebus" where the love letter plays the role of entanglement of the story line and the geographical map of Holland becomes the key for decoding the scene. Vermeer created a lot of "love-letter pictures" and his main idea had been the harmony and unity of the loving hearts. The map of the Southern Holland district where the artist had worked throughout all his life symbolized the terms "Motherland" and "Fatherland" for him. He seems to remind all simple Dutch people of their civic duty - to maintain the independence of the country which had been won at the cost of a hard struggle during 80 years. Saukeles were made of expensive textiles and felt and ornamented with golden embroidery, with strings of pearls, corals and silver globules which had got a special idea, most of all it was defense. Archeological discoveries prove that the prototype of saukeles had been high head-dresses of sakhs (tribes who used to live at the territories of Central Asia and Kazakhstan in V - III centuries before Christ). Saukeles were made by most skillful masters, the work used to last about a year and its cost was very high, sometimes their price was equal to the one of 100 good fast horses.
